The funeral service in the Orthodox Church, although not considered as specifically sacramental, belongs among the special liturgical rites of the People of God. When a person dies, the Church serves a special service over the lifeless body and accompany it to the grave. All hymns of the funeral meditate on the tragedy of death and the mercy of God, and petition eternal life for the person who is “fallen asleep.”
