Only Orthodox Christians can receive Holy Communion during the celebration of the Divine Liturgy. In order to prepare oneself to Holy Communion, an Orthodox Christian should previously confess his sins to a priest, read the prayers of preparation to Holy Communion found in the Prayer book and fast (do not eat nor drink anything) from midnight until the moment of Holy Communion. Please note that Confession and Communion are distinct sacraments. One should confess the days prior to the Divine Liturgy. If one has not the opportunity to come to confession during the week, then he should arrive early, before the beginning of the Divine Liturgy. According to the blessing of the priest, it is not necessary to confess before each communion. Regular confession and frequent communion are encouraged.
